Power Up Your Mobile Devices with the Monaco Solar Charger

Are you looking for a way to be a little greener in your life? Or do you find yourself wishing you had a way to charge your mobile phone in the middle of nowhere? Well, I might have the product you’re looking for. I recently received a Monaco Solar Charger from our friends at WirelessGround. As the name implies the Monaco charger uses sunlight to power up your devices, but it doesn’t mean it needs the sun to work. The charger has an internal battery that when charged allows you to plug in your mobile phone without sun or another power supply.

I’ve been using the device for about two weeks and I can honestly say that it is a product I would recommend to my readers. I found it to be extremely useful in a recent road trip where I left my car charger in another vehicle and had no way of charging a dying iPhone. With the Monaco solar charger I was able to charge the iPhone using the Apple Dock Connector to USB Cable that plugged in to the unit’s USB port. Since it was a 5 hour drive I was able to place the Monaco Solar Charger on the dashboard, revive the iPhone and charge my iPad as well. So far this charger has proven to be a life saver for me and as you will see in the images below it also portable and easy to use.

With the Monaco charger you will be able to power up over 100 mobile phones (listed at the end of the review), GPS devices (I was able to power a Magellan Roadmate GPS), Bluetooth headsets, and anything with a small power draw that uses a USB connector.

The solar charger has 3 charging modes:

Via AC Power – This will allow you to charge the solar powered chargers internal battery using the supplied AC adapter (charge time is about 6hrs).

Via Computer’s USB Port – You can charge the adapter using your computer’s USB port with the supplied USB cable (charge time is about 6hrs).

Via Solar Exposure – When the solar charger is exposed to the sun the internal battery should charge in about 8hrs.

Overall the build quality of the charger appears to be good, it has a good weight to it and feels solid. All of the cables and adapters that I received appear to be of good quality although I wish the USB cable could be longer. One of the things that stand out while using this charger is that there is no indicator light while using it to power other devices to determine battery levels. It’s not a deal killer, but it would really make sense for an accessory like this.

Let’s look at dimensions and some pictures.

Battery Capacity: 1800mAh

Weight: 93.5 grams / 3.3 oz

Physical Dimensions: 55.5 x 105.8 x 14.5mm / 2.19 x 4.17 x .57 inches

The port uses a standard sized USB connector and can connect to the supplied cables or other cables like the iPhone’s Apple Dock Connector.

Google Nexus One plugged into the Monaco Solar Charger. During use, I have found that the solar charger takes about the same time to charge a mobile phone as you would encounter while charging the phone via USB on a computer.
